However, it’s later revealed that Hama was only able to escape prison because she learned the ways of bloodbending, manipulating the blood in Fire Nation guards’ blood to control them. Hama relayed her story to Katara, Avatar Aang, and the rest of the crew. Haru and Katara were both later at Zuko's coronation as Fire Lord.Hama came to full power when she realized she could manipulate blood. They both sought refuge in the Western Air Temple but were forced to separate when Azula attacked. They participated in the invasion but it failed so they escaped on Appa along with the other children and teenagers. They hugged and Katara told Haru that she was really happy to see him. He and Katara were reunited at the black cliffs where the forced met before heading to the capital. Several months later, Haru joined the forces in the Fire Nation invasion.

After the earthbenders won, Haru thanked Katara and invited her to reclaim his village with him, but Katara had to go to the North Pole with Aang. Katara had trouble getting the earthbenders to rebel against the Fire Nation but Haru eventually stood up along with her. They were reunited on a prison rig and Haru introduced Katara to his father Tyro. She purposely got herself arrested so that she could go find Haru. Katara was upset when she found out and was determined to save him. Unfortunately, Haru was arrested overnight. Katara and Haru later encountered a man trapped in a mine so Katara encouraged him to earthbend and save him. Haru explained to Katara that he likes to earthbend because it reminds him of his father. Katara later talked with Haru and sympathized with him because she lost her mother to the Fire Nation. She told him that she saw him earthbending in front of his mother and learned that he would be arrested if he was caught and that this happened to his father.

He ran away as soon as Katara approached him so she followed him back to his village. Katara first saw Haru when he was practicing his earthbending in the woods.
